I can understand why a large media organization like CNN won’t publish cartoons deemed “offensive” by militant Muslims. It’s not an easy call to put your life on the line. But spare us their explanations about Muslim sensitivities. CNN is certainly willing to inflame the same Muslims with pictures from Abu Ghraib when they endanger US servicemen. (H/T Powerline)

I'm a Mormon. In my 'cultural' history there have been things that I'm not proud of. I wonder what it would be like in a time of terrible cultural devide that isolated Mormons from the rest of the world and made it a dangerous place for them. What if during that time, someone drew comparisons between Joseph Smith and the Laferty brothers, or the early Mormons who participated in the Mountain Meadows Massacre? How would we react? Now, in a time of relative acceptance of Mormons and of relative prosperity, a book was published that portrayed some Mormons as extreemists (the Lafertys) who killed thier family under direction from God. The book made no attempt to put down our Prophet or indicate that Mormonism encouraged violence, yet Mormons were outraged and offended by it.

As a Mormon also, I definately recognize parallels you allude to. I find anti-Mormon literature and movies offensive when they mock items sacred to me. The parallel breaks down with our response. As a culture, we do not respond by burning down "offender' homes or issuing death threats. Not all Muslims act this way either, but a significant number do.
The point I tried to make with the CNN post is they use "sensitivity" as a cover for not printing the cartoons offensive to Muslims when they don't apply such sensitivity across the board. Because of this, I suspect their actual motivation for not showing the cartoons is to protect their staff throughout the world. They should have the honesty to just say so.
You will not see me criticizing a media outlet not showing the cartoons when their reasoning has been consistantly applied to other religions.
